What is highest successful 4th innings chase at Galle ahead of SL vs IND 1st Test?

With India ahead, Sri Lanka will look to level up the benchmark.

As India and Sri Lanka head into the decisive stages of the SL vs IND first Test at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, a statistic looms large in the minds of cricket fanatics: how challenging would the conditions be to chase a total in the fourth innings at this venue?

The answer to this is now particularly relevant for Indian fans, as the Shubman Gill-led India have posted a promising target of 372 runs for the host side. After having posted an honourable 462 in the first innings, India established a massive 178-run lead when they bowled out Sri Lanka for just 284 runs.

Though having struggled with the bat, India raced past the target of 350 and set a rather challenging total for the host side. Rishabh Pant remained the highlight of India’s second innings with a blistering knock of 66.

With the hosts, Sri Lanka, coming out to chase the target on a surface where fourth-innings batting has historically been extremely demanding, India do have a high prospect of having an upper hand in the game.

The highest successful run-chase in the history of Galle during the fourth innings is held by India’s arch-rivals Pakistan. Earlier, during the 2022 tour of Sri Lanka, Pakistan registered a magnificent victory against them by successfully chasing a target of 342 runs.

This is recorded as the only victory by a team while chasing a score of 300 or more in the fourth innings at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. Before this iconic run-chase, the highest successful chase in the fourth innings was 268, held by the host side Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan side completed the 268-run chase against New Zealand back in 2019 with former skipper Dimuth Karunaratne playing a special knock. However, before 2022, only one team had successfully chased down a target of more than 200 runs in the final innings at this ground.

This proves that the Galle pitch often poses a challenge for batsmen, and scoring runs becomes a very difficult job on the final day of the Test. The match has already seen some extraordinary help for the spinners, with Indian and Sri Lankan spinners picking up most of the wickets each.

Hence, India, having set a target, already holds a substantial advantage over the host side, who need to produce a very special effort if they want to chase the new benchmark total of 372 runs.
