Top five highest successful chase by India in T20Is

India have successfully chased down six 200+ scores in T20Is so far.

India have established themselves as one of the most fearless chasing sides in T20I cricket, repeatedly pulling off daunting run chases under immense pressure. Their ability to remain composed, read conditions quickly, and shift gears with explosive intent has allowed them to hunt down totals once considered unreachable in the shortest format.

In recent years, particularly this decade, India’s batting has evolved into a genuine powerhouse. The influence of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has bred a new generation of confident, aggressive cricketers unafraid of big targets. With flatter pitches and deeper batting line-ups, no total now feels truly safe against this Indian unit.

In this article, we take a closer look at the five highest run chases successfully completed by Team India in the history of T20 international cricket.

India beat New Zealand by six wickets in the first T20I at Eden Park, Auckland, chasing down 204 with an over to spare. KL Rahul set the tone with a blistering 56 off just 27 balls, exploiting the short boundaries and keeping the required rate firmly in check after Rohit Sharma fell early.

After Rahul’s dismissal, Shreyas Iyer showed maturity beyond his years, anchoring the chase with an unbeaten 58 off 29 deliveries. Supported calmly by Manish Pandey, Iyer mixed aggression with smart shot selection to finish the game efficiently, sealing a confident start for India in the five-match T20I series.

4. 207 vs Sri Lanka (2009)

India’s chase of 207 against Sri Lanka in the second T20I at Mohali in 2009 remains one of the most iconic run chases in T20I history. An explosive opening start by Virender Sehwag, who smashed 64, set the tone as India attacked relentlessly from the outset on a flat PCA Stadium surface.

The finish belonged to Yuvraj Singh, who marked his birthday with a breathtaking unbeaten 60 off just 25 balls. Supported earlier by MS Dhoni, Yuvraj’s five towering sixes powered India to a six-wicket win with five balls to spare, then the highest successful chase in T20I cricket.

3. 208 vs West Indies (2019)

India completed one of their finest T20I run chases as Virat Kohli delivered a captain’s knock to script a memorable six-wicket win over the West Indies in Hyderabad in 2019. Chasing a massive target of 208, Kohli anchored the innings with a sublime unbeaten 94 off just 50 balls.

The chase gathered decisive momentum through Kohli’s 100-run partnership with KL Rahul, before the skipper took full control in the closing overs. His late assault, including 54 runs off his final 19 deliveries, completely dismantled the West Indies bowling, particularly Kesrick Williams.

2. 209 vs Australia (2023)

India conquered one of their most dramatic T20I chases in Visakhapatnam, hunting down a daunting target of 209 against Australia to register their highest successful run chase in the format at the time. Stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav led from the front with a breathtaking 80 off 42 balls, blending innovation and controlled aggression to keep the chase alive despite early wickets.

Ishan Kishan’s fluent 58 and a nerveless cameo from Rinku Singh (22*) ensured India stayed on course in a tense finish that went down to the final ball.

India produced a batting masterclass in Raipur to script one of the most emphatic run chases in T20I history, hunting down New Zealand’s 209 with a staggering 28 balls to spare. Reduced to 6/2 early, the hosts showed zero panic as Ishan Kishan launched a brutal counterattack, racing to a 21-ball fifty and finishing with a blistering 76 off 32 balls that completely flipped the momentum.

Skipper Suryakumar Yadav then took complete control, ending a long half-century drought with an unbeaten 82 off 37 balls, while Shivam Dube provided calm finishing touches. The 122-run stand between Kishan and Suryakumar came in just 48 balls, making a mockery of the target and sealing India’s joint-highest successful T20I chase.
