India have successfully chased down three 300+ targets in test cricket.

India are one of the most successful sides in cricket history, particularly in test cricket. In the longest format, the Asian Giants have been a dominant force at home for a long time, but over the past few years, they have also won several test matches outside Asia.

Indian cricketing history is filled with many great batters who have showcased their skills and talent in different eras.

In test cricket, the Asian Giants have recorded some of the most memorable victories, a few of them have come while chasing a target. Batting in the fourth innings of a test match is mostly the toughest period for the batsmen in the game. Yet, at times, the world-famed Indian batsmen have stepped up to gun down tall targets.

On that note, let’s take a look at the five highest successful run chases by the Indian cricket team in test cricket till now.

5. 264/3 vs Sri Lanka, Kandy, 2001

When India toured Sri Lanka in 2001, during the Kandy test, the visitors chased down the target of 264 to record their highest successful chase against the Lankans.

Talking about the match, Sri Lanka made 274 after Mahela Jayawardene slammed 104 off 149 balls. In reply, India scored 232 runs.

Sri Lanka were then bundled out for 221 in their second innings and set a tough target of 264 for the visitors. While chasing, Sourav Ganguly played a match-winning knock of 98 runs, which guided India to a seven-wicket win.

4. 276/5 vs West Indies, Delhi, 2011

The Asian Giants chased down the target of 276 runs against the West Indies during the Delhi test in 2011. West Indies made a decent score of 304 runs in the first innings. In reply, India were bundled out for 209 runs. 

The visitors were then all out for 180 after Ravichandran Ashwin bagged a six-wicket haul. While chasing 276, Sachin Tendulkar (76) and VVS Laxman (58*) marched the hosts to a five-wicket win.

3. 329/7 vs Australia, Brisbane, 2021

The Gabba test win against Australia in 2021 is one of the most famous victories for the Indian cricket team in test cricket history.

Australia scored 369 in their first innings after Marnus Labuschagne played a wonderful knock of 108 runs. In reply, the visitors made 336 as Washington Sundar (62) and Shardul Thakur (67) played fighting knocks.

The hosts were all out for 294 in their second innings and set a huge target of 328 runs for India. While chasing, Shubman Gill (91), Chesteshwar Pujara (56) and Rishabh Pant (89*) played incredible knocks to take India to a historic three-wicket over Australia.

2. 387/4 vs England, Chennai, 2008

During the Chennai test against England in 2008, India chased down a huge target of 387 runs. Batting first, England made a decent score of 316 runs, and in reply, the hosts were bundled out for 241, with MS Dhoni being the top-scorer with 53.

England declared their second innings at 311/9 after Andrew Strauss and Paul Collingwood slammed brilliant centuries.

While chasing 387, Virender Sehwag played a blistering knock of 83 off 68 balls. Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 103 then propelled India over the line by six wickets.

1. 406/4 vs West Indies, Port of Spain, 1976

India recorded their highest successful run chase in test cricket against the West Indies in 1976 by chasing down 403 in Port of Spain.

The legendary Viv Richard’s 177 powered the West Indies to 359 in the first innings. In reply, India managed only 228 runs. West Indies then scored 271/6d as Alvin Kallicharran hammered 103* runs and set a massive target of 403 runs.

While chasing, Sunil Gavaskar (102), Mohinder Amarnath (85), and Gundappa Viswanath (112) registered match-winning knocks to take India to victory by six wickets.
