Top 5 highest successful run chases by India against Australia in test cricket
India have successfully chased down 14 times against Australia in test cricket.
Batting in the fourth innings in test cricket is not generally a preferred option, more so if the teams expect the match to go into the last couple of days. This is because the pitch deteriorates to an extent that even a target of 250 is really daunting to gun down.
Chasing in test cricket is tough and the challenge mounts exponentially when you have to chase against Australia, who have bred some of the greatest bowlers of all time.
The Indian team have been playing Australia in test cricket since 1947 and have recorded only 14 wins while batting fourth against them out of 48 instances so far. They lost 23, tied one, and drew 10.
Let us see the five highest targets India have chased down against Australia in test cricket.
Top 5 highest successful run chases by India against Australia in test cricket:
5. 207, Bengaluru, 2010
In the Bengaluru test of the 2010 home series, Cheteshwar Pujara and Sachin Tendulkar led India’s charge in their ambition of chasing down the target of 207 runs on a spin-friendly pitch.
Pujara, who was early in his career, scored 72 runs off 89 balls in an enterprising innings as he hit seven fours. Tendulkar, the veteran, scored 53* off 77 balls with five fours and two sixes as India avoided any jitters to win the test by seven wickets.
Earlier, Tendulkar hit a double hundred in India’s first innings. He duly bagged the Man of the Match award.
4. 216, Mohali 2010
The Mohali test of the 2010 series in India remains one of India’s most famous wins in test cricket. After both teams piled up over 400 runs in their first innings, India were set a target of 216 runs on a deteriorating surface.
India kept losing wickets and were reduced to 124/8 before VVS Laxman, who was battling severe back pain, forged a rearguard with Ishant Sharma. Ishant got out with the target still 11 runs away but Laxman and No. 11 Pragyan Ojha got the side over the line in a very tense end to a high-voltage clash. Laxman remained unbeaten on 73 off 79 balls.
3. 230, Adelaide, 2003
The Adelaide test match victory on the 2003/04 tour is one of India’s most memorable triumphs on Australian soil. That win came after India had conceded 556 runs in the first innings of the match.
Rahul Dravid’s splendid 233 and 148 from Laxman helped India get close to Australia’s total. They then received a target of 230.
Dravid once again was India’s top-scorer with the bat in the second innings with his knock of 72* and marched the side to a four-wicket win.
2. 254, Brabourne, 1964
Amid the highs of India’s success over Australia in the 21st century, their victory at the Brabourne stadium, Mumbai, in 1964 doesn’t get any mention. It was a really close game that India won by only two wickets while chasing 254.
In the chase, opener Dilip Sardesai top-scored with 56 runs and captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi played a gritty knock of 53 runs while batting for over three hours. Tailenders Vijay Manjrekar (39) and Chandu Borde (30) made crucial contributions in helping India win with only two wickets in hand.
1. 328, Brisbane, 2021
The historic win at the Gabba, Brisbane, in 2021 remains India’s arguably greatest test match victory as they played with a second-string side – only two players who featured in the first test of the series survived in the XI until the last test.
A few players in the side were playing their first test series in Australia and a few made their debuts in that Gabba test.
India had somehow managed to keep the match alive till the last day of the game. Chasing a target of 328, opener Shubman Gill scored 91, Cheteshwar Pujara scored 56 off 211 balls while taking a dozen body blows. Rishabh Pant played a mature knock of 89* runs to seal the match and the series.
India’s chase of the target of 328 at the Gabba in 2021 is their highest successful chase against Australia in test cricket.
