How could opening pair of Abhishek Sharma & Vaibhav Sooryavanshi prove beneficial for India's T20I plans in future?

Abhishek Sharma has cemented his place as an opener in T20Is.

Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi are two openers known for their aggressive batting and ability to clear boundaries easily in T20s. Their high strike rate while batting helps the team get quickfire starts and dominate opposition bowlers from the very first over.

While Abhishek has already cemented his place as a T20I opener for India, Sooryavanshi is yet to make his international debut; however, he has already made a mark with his performances at the domestic level and for the junior Indian teams.

Abhishek made his T20I debut during the Zimbabwe tour in July 2024 and grabbed the spotlight with a century in his second game itself. Since then, he has impressed with his batting heroics in various bilateral series and multi-national tournaments, rising the ladder to finalise his spot as a permanent T20I opener for the Men in Blue.

The 25-year-old played a crucial role in India’s journey to the Asia Cup 2025 title, in which he also bagged the Player of the Series award. With his consistent performances, he was also picked in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 and became part of the title-winning team under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy.

Speaking about Vaibhav, he has earned his maiden call-up to India’s T20I team for the upcoming Ireland & England tour. The left-handed batsman rocked with his batting heroics in IPL 2026 by winning the Orange Cap and breaking numerous batting records.

Although Sooryavanshi has not played any game for India so far, he played match-winning knocks for the India U19 team. He was adjudged Player of the Match in the U19 ODI World Cup final against England earlier this year for his quickfire century. Now, he looks forward to a spot in India’s T20I team and showcasing his might in the national jersey.

Abhishek Sharma & Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can strengthen India’s opening slot in T20Is

Over the past year, India have tried out various opening partners alongside Abhishek Sharma in the shortest format. Shubman Gill opened with Sharma during the Asia Cup but lost his spot before this year. Similarly, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson have also been allotted opening slots alongside Abhishek.

Now, Sooryavanshi is highly expected to get the opportunity to open with Sharma in T20Is. The move could prove beneficial as both left-handed batsmen can provide ultra-aggressive starts in the powerplay. They dominate the opposition bowlers from the first over itself and are comfortable with both pace and spin.

Having two aggressive openers can help India maximise runs in the first six overs, enabling the team to post or chase down big scores in T20Is. Both of them are power hitters and selfless batters, which will benefit the team in the future.

Abhishek is already establishing himself at the international level, while Sooryavanshi represents the next generation of talent.

Investing in their partnership could give India a stable and dominant opening combination for several years. Their explosive starts and high strike rate align with India’s aggressive approach in modern T20I cricket.
