Bangladesh stun Australia in historic Test win

Bangladesh gave a memorable performance in Darwin to beat Australia by 9 wickets. Hasan Mahmud played a major role with the ball, while Tanzid Hasan Tamim’s century helped Bangladesh take control of the match.

Australia were bowled out for 198 in their first innings, with Steve Smith’s 71 being their highest score. Bangladesh then made 426, gaining a huge advantage before bowling Australia out for 284 in the second innings.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz was also among the key performers for Bangladesh, taking five wickets in Australia’s second innings. Bangladesh then completed the chase in only 14.2 overs to record their first Test win in Australia.

Australia’s WTC points percentage takes a hit after loss to Bangladesh

Before the defeat, Australia were sitting comfortably at the top of the WTC table. As per the latest WTC Standings, Australia’s points percentage has now dropped from 87.50% to 77.78%.

However, Australia still remain at No.1, but the gap between them and the chasing teams have become smaller. South Africa are second with 75%, and New Zealand are third with 72.22%.

Bangladesh have also strengthened their own position, moving to 66.67% after their third win in five matches, and now they are in fourth place in the WTC standings.

How does Bangladesh’s win help India?

India remain fifth with a points percentage of 48.15%. So, Bangladesh’s victory does not help India to immediately move up in the WTC table, but it makes Australia’s position less secure.

This is important because India still have several tests left in the current WTC cycle. If India can start performing consistently, they can put pressure on the teams above them.

Australia also have a long schedule ahead, including a five-test series in India early next year. Their defeat in Darwin means they cannot afford too many losses if they want to remain in control of their WTC qualification hopes.
