Every remaining Test could prove decisive in India’s quest for a ICC WTC 2025-27 final berth.
The Indian Cricket Team have been playing a lot of white-ball bilateral series lately. After the end of IPL 2026, they played a one-off Test and a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. They then toured Ireland and England for seven T20Is and three ODIs, after which they toured Zimbabwe for a three-match T20I series.
Their next assignment is in Sri Lanka, where they will play two Test matches. Shubman Gill‘s young team will tour Sri Lanka hoping to inflict a whitewash on the hosts. The significance of this series is very high, as India are currently fifth in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 table. They will be looking to win the Sri Lanka series and improve their points percentage.
India suffered a 0-2 defeat against South Africa in home conditions last year, which hurt their chances of qualifying for the WTC final. Their chances of finishing in the top two of the WTC table are now slim, so the next big question is: How can the Indian team qualify for the ICC WTC 2025-27 final?
Here’s how India can qualify for ICC WTC 2025-27 final

India currently sit fifth in the ICC WTC points table with a points percentage of 48.15. To reach the 2025-27 WTC Final, they will need a points percentage of approximately 64 to 68 per cent. This means that the Shubman Gill-led side will have to win at least seven of their remaining nine Test matches to qualify for the final of the WTC.
They will next tour Sri Lanka for a two match Test series, and for Shubman Gill’s side, winning both matches will be extremely important. They cannot afford to lose or even draw a single game, as it would make their chances of reaching the WTC Final even slimmer.
In October, they will tour New Zealand for another two-match Test series, which could prove difficult. New Zealand last defeated India 3-0 in India, ending their long streak of winning Test series in home conditions.
After that, India will host Australia for the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With such challenging opponents, registering seven wins in nine matches will not be easy for the Indian team. However, the fans will believe that this team can achieve something special, as they have done on several occasions in the past.
How many matches does India need to win to qualify for the World Test Championship final?
India need to win at least seven of their remaining nine Test matches to have a realistic chance of qualifying for the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship Final.
What is the next Test series the Indian team will play?
India’s next Test assignment is a two-match series against Sri Lanka in August.
