India eyeing third WTC final spot with dominant victory over Sri Lanka.
The Indian Cricket Team registered a massive 165-run victory over hosts Sri Lanka in the first Test of India’s tour to Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium. With this win, India extended their dominant record in Test cricket over their neighbours Sri Lanka, who have failed to defeat them in a Test match since 2015.
This win marks immense importance in India’s ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 campaign as the Shubman Gill-led side aims for their third entry into the ICC WTC final.
However, following their humiliating defeat at home against South Africa, it won’t be an easy ride to Lord’s for the young Indian team.

India are currently placed fifth in the WTC 2025-27 points table with a PCT of 53.33. They will aim to win the second Test against Sri Lanka, which is scheduled to start on the 23rd August in Colombo. A complete 2-0 series sweep will elevate India’s point percentage, taking them close to the safe margin of 60%.
Historically, the 60% mark is considered a sufficient PCT to finish in the top two spots on the WTC points table. The top two teams qualify for the WTC Final. India are currently placed fifth after Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Bangladesh.
After this series against Sri Lanka, India have a two-match series scheduled against New Zealand, which will be followed by a five-match home series against Australia, which marks the end of their ICC WTC 2025-27 campaign. Out of the remaining Tests, India need to emerge victorious in at least 5 or 6 more matches to keep their WTC hopes on track.
Another key factor in India’s Test rebound would be to have the maximum impact in away Tests. India’s record at home over the past two years has been very poor. They have lost two home series against New Zealand and South Africa, both ending in a clean sweep in favour of the visitors.
However, under overseas conditions, India’s numbers have been comparatively better, as they ended the England tour in a draw with a heroic win at the Oval.
However, to India’s advantage, unlike Australia and South Africa, India do not consider point deductions due to slow over rate a major concern, especially since they use spinners through the middle phase.
Though India do not have an excellent record in Kiwi conditions, the return of Jasprit Bumrah alongside the young Indian speedguns might be the point of difference for the India team en route to the WTC Final.
