How can India accommodate Yashasvi Jaiswal in ODI XI for CWC 2027?

Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to be part of Indian squad for ODI World Cup 2027.

After winning the T20 World Cup earlier this year, Indian Cricket Team’s next target will be to win the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. The tournament will be played in October and November next year in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

India have won two ICC Cricket World Cup titles; however, their last victory came in the 2011 edition under MS Dhoni. They failed to win the final the previous edition in 2023, where they lost to Australia in final, despite dominating all the teams in the league stage.

India have kickstarted the preparations for ODI World Cup 2027. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been giving opportunities to several stars in ODIs since last year. The major changes begin when Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer were appointed as captain and vice-captain of the ODI team respectively.

One of the major talking headache that will be there for management ahead of World Cup will the opening combination. There’s a huge competition for the opening slot in India’s XI in ODIs. Currently, former captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are the first-choice openers; however, Yashasvi Jaiswal has also put his case forward with strong performances.

Although Jaiswal has played a handful of ODI games, he has a fabulous record in the 50-over format and Tests. The left-handed batsman has scored 285 runs in just six ODIs at an average of 71.25, including two centuries. He also made a mark in the ODI series against Afghanistan, smashing a ton in the 3rd encounter.

Jaiswal, with his red-hot form, has emerged as a strong contender for opening spot in India’s XI for the World Cup next year. However, with Rohit and Gill already taking that spot over the last few years, it would be tough for him to find a place.

But, with the kind of form that he is in, Jaiswal is expected to be part of India’s squad for Cricket World Cup 2027 as a back-up opener. The only way, as of now, for Jaiswal to be in India’s XI for tournament could be as injury replacement of top-order players.

For instance, Rohit Sharma, 39, has been struggling with his fitness since last few months. At the time of World Cup, he will b 40 years old – an age where injuries can happen quite frequently. Also, Rohit has been under scanner for his batting as well. If by chance, his form witnesses downfall near the tournament, this could be another way for Jaiswal to make it into XI.

Also, injury to Gill or Virat Kohli could lead to Jaiswal’s addition in the XI. Like the recent ODI series against Afghanistan, where Gill scored a big hundred at three in second game after Kohli was ruled out of the series due to hamstring injury.
