How many teams will participate in Cricket at LA Olympics 2028?

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved cricket’s inclusion at the LA Olympics 2028 last year.

Cricket is one of the five new sports that will feature at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. It will be just the second time that cricket will be part of the Olympics.

The first and only time cricket was played at the Olympics was in 1900 in Paris. Then, it was just a one-off game between Great Britain and France played over two days, with the former winning by 158 runs.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) ratified cricket’s inclusion at the LA Olympics 2028 last year. It will be played in T20 format.

How many teams will participate in cricket at LA Olympics 2028?

In 2023, the ICC recommended six-team T20 tournaments for both men and women at LA Olympics 2028. The qualification is likely to be based on the ICC’s T20I rankings on a cut-off date, which is undecided yet.

There are two reasons why the ICC has proposed for only six teams to compete in the LA Olympics 2028.

The primary reason, according to a report in ESPNcricnifo, is the IOC’s drive to become more cost-efficient, which it has laid out in its strategic plan titled “Olympic Agenda 2020+5”. They believe the best way to cut down on costs is to reduce the number of athletes.

Secondly, LA28 also told the ICC that the quality of the event must not be compromised, and it would need to be contested by the very best teams. Hence, cricket’s governing council proposed six teams for both men’s and women’s events.

Further, the men’s and women’s competitions will be played consecutively and most likely at only a single venue because of the logistics challenges.
