Shreyas Iyer is Shubman Gill’s deputy in the ODI Indian team.

Shreyas Iyer and Team India are in Japan as they prepare to win the men’s cricket gold at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya. Iyer will be leading the side at the games, while other first-choice Indian players on the team include Jasprit Bumrah, Abhishek Sharma, and more. VVS Laxman has gone with the team as the head coach.

Iyer and Laxman worked together in Zimbabwe, where the former got his first series win in Indian colors after a disastrous defeat against Ireland and England. They will face Japan in the Suzuki Cup before the official tournament.

On the other hand, a few serious changes have been made by the coaching staff of the Indian national cricket team. Following their dismal performances in the recent series, due to not being fully prepared and tactical issues, Shreyas Iyer reportedly will replace India’s ODI and Test captain, Shubman Gill, mid-series.

However, the question remains: for how many games will Shubman Gill sit back and let Iyer take the lead?

Shreyas Iyer is expected to captain the Men in Blue in seven overall games. He will replace Shubman Gill for the last two ODI games of the series soon, before leading the side as the skipper in the T20I series, which will consist of five games.

The change will take place as part of the national adjustment ahead of the upcoming series, in which the Men in Blue will travel to Oceania. The five T20Is of India’s tour of New Zealand will begin on October 22, and the following five ODIs will be played from November 4.

The 5th ODI between the two sides will end on November 15 in Mount Maunganui. Meanwhile, the opening Test match will commence only four days later on November 19, in Wellington. The team will not have the opportunity to play a practice game against any provincial side during the transition period before the Indian players switch into test cricket mode.

The tactical change will give multi-format players a few more days to recover and prepare for white-ball history. As a result, team India’s vice captain Shreyas Iyer automatically becomes the side’s first choice to lead the team after Shubman Gill.
