Vaibhav Sooryavanshi did not go well in the opening match of the Tri-Nation A series against Sri Lanka.

In the opening match of the Tri-Nation A series, India A clashed with Sri Lanka A at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, Sri Lanka, on June 9.

Tilak Varma is leading the Men-in-Blue. Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad is the vice-captain. Arshad Khan and Anukul Roy bagged their India A debut caps ahead of the match.

The match started with India opting to bat first. The Indian opening pair fell cheaply, leaving the team at 16-2 in just 4.1 overs. Prabhsimran Singh looked uncomfortable since the start of his innings. It took him eight deliveries to even get off the mark.

Priyansh Arya batted at No. 3. He steadied the innings alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad, but was then run out due to a lack of coordination between the two. Arya was looking good but got out after scoring 32 runs with 5 boundaries.

Then the leadership duo put up a 150-run stand, with the deputy reaching his 21st List A century, in his 100th List A game. Gaikwad had a slow start but then picked up pace, aided by six fours and three sixes.

However, Tilak Varma looked a bit scratchy as he was unable to quicken his innings. He scored 60 off 97 balls with just 3 boundaries. He reached his fifty in 85 balls. Ultimately, India posted a score of 277 on the board.

In the end, when the nerves were high, India defended the score, winning the match by 8 runs with four bowlers picking 2 wickets each. In the last 10 deliveries, they took four wickets of Sri Lanka A and bowled them out.

One of the reasons this match generated so much buzz even before it began was the participation of wonder-kid Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

The 15-year-old was the talk of the town after his phenomenal performance in the Indian Premier League 2026. He scored 776 runs with a strike rate of 237 in that tournament. He won the Orange Cap and the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament, among other awards.

The squad for this Tri-Nation A series was announced during the IPL itself, and it got all the viewers excited as they were to see Vaibhav in the 50-over format too.

However, Sooryavanshi’s first outing in this series was rather underwhelming. He opened the innings with Prabhsimran Singh, who himself appeared quite nervous.

The teenage sensation hit three boundaries before he got out, miscuing the ball at mid-off. Eventually, he scored only 14 runs off 12 balls. Although the pitch was slow and required cautious batting, he was trying to make up for the slow start by playing his aggressive shots.

Sooryavanshi was the Player of the Tournament in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2026, scoring 439 runs in 7 innings, with a match-winning 175 knock in the final.

There are still 3 matches to go for India A in this Tri-Nation A series. The wonder kid will get more opportunities to showcase his capabilities.
