Rajasthan Royals (RR) pacer Trent Boult gained a unique record in his team’s dominating nine-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI) in Jaipur on April 22 in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

The 34-year-old pacer has played 78 tests, 114 ODIs, and 57 T20Is for New Zealand from 2011. He has taken 317, 211, and 74 wickets respectively. He refused the New Zealand central contract two years ago and has been a freelancer in T20 leagues across the world. However, he has been part of the New Zealand team in major ICC events in the T20 World Cup 2022 and the ICC World Cup 2023.   

Trent Boult started his IPL career with the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2015 when he was bought for $600,000. He took a total of 10 wickets in two seasons for the SRH. Then in IPL 2017, he was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders and took 5 wickets in 6 matches for them.

He moved to Delhi Capitals for the next two seasons and picked 18 and 5 wickets respectively in the 2018 and 2019 IPL seasons. He then moved to Mumbai Indians and helped them win the IPL 2020 with 25 wickets in the Covid-hit season and then in the IPL 2021, took 13 wickets.

He was released ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, where he joined Rajasthan Royals and since then, he has had 16, 13, and 9 wickets respectively. Currently, Boult has 9 wickets in the IPL 2024 as RR reigns supreme on the No.1 spot in the points table.

The Kiwi speedster Trent Boult has been lethal with the new ball throughout his IPL career, affecting key dismissals upfront and breaking the back of the opposition’s batting order. In this match, Trent Boult dismissed former MI skipper Rohit Sharma in the first over.

This wicket gave RR a brilliant start and highlighted his ability to strike in crucial encounters. However, it was his first wicket in the powerplay in the previous five matches with the last one also coming against MI.

With 26 wickets to his name, Boult surpassed Bhuvneshwar Kumar (25) to become the bowler with the most wickets in the first over of an innings in IPL followed by Praveen Kumar (15), Sandeep Sharma (13), Deepak Chahar and Zaheer Khan, who claimed 12 wickets each.
