West Indies missed direct qualification for the ODI World Cup 2027 after Afghanistan beat Ireland in the second ODI.
Afghanistan have shown great performance in the ongoing ODI series against Ireland and have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead. Two games are left to play, and Afghanistan can’t lose the series from here.
With two consecutive wins, Afghanistan have also secured direct qualification for the ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Notably, South Africa and Zimbabwe have already qualified as co-hosts, whereas Namibia, being an associate nation, have to go through the qualifiers.
The other teams to qualify for the ICC event are India, Australia, New Zealand, England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. But what has it done? It has made sure that the two-time World Champions, West Indies, will have to go through the qualifiers once again.
Here’s how West Indies can qualify for the ODI World Cup 2027
Once known as the unbeatable side in the cricketing world, West Indies have seen a steep decline in performance in the last decade or so. They have been struggling in this sport.
The biggest example of this was the 2023 ODI World Cup, when they failed to qualify for the major tournament. It was the first ODI World Cup played without the West Indies.
Now, they have missed direct qualification for the second time in a row. To make it to the 2027 ODI World Cup, they have to go through the global ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
10 teams will participate in this qualifier tournament, and the top four teams will advance to the mega event. These 10 teams will include the 9th and 10th-ranked ODI teams as of the September 30, 2026, cut-off date. West Indies and Ireland are currently ranked 9th and 10th in ODIs.
Four teams will be from the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, having finished in the top four. Meanwhile, the top four teams of the World Cup Qualifier Playoff will be the other four remaining participants.
The team that finishes at the top of the Global ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier will advance to the second round, and the other three teams will compete in a single round-robin stage. The winner among these three sides will move to the second round.
That means West Indies need to make sure that they finish the ten-team qualifier at the top to reach the big event. If they finish the qualifiers in the next three positions, they need to win the single round-robin series.

The 2027 ODI World Cup will be played between October 4 and November 21.
