Afghanistan defeated England by eight runs in the eighth match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

On Wednesday, February 26, Afghanistan defeated England by eight runs in Lahore to win their first match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

After winning the toss and batting first, Afghanistan had a shaky start, slipping to 37/3 before Ibrahim Zadran and Hashmatullah Shahidi led the recovery with a 103-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Zadran was then joined by Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi, who contributed 40 and 41 runs respectively.

Ibrahim starred for Afghanistan, registering the highest ODI score for the country with 177 runs off 146 balls, including 12 fours and six sixes, to propel the team to a total of 325/7.

In reply, England lost their first three wickets within 17 overs, slipping to 98/3. Joe Root led the fightback for England, scoring 120 off 111 balls, including 11 fours and a six.

Root found support from Jos Buttler and Jamie Overton, with both stitching together partnerships of over 50 runs with him.

Omarzai’s heroics later helped Afghanistan seal the win as he dismissed both Root and Overton to finish with match figures of 5/58.

South Africa and Australia continue to lead Group B with three points each, with South Africa on top due to a superior NRR of +2.140 compared to Australia’s +0.475. Afghanistan’s victory has kept them alive in the competition with two points in two games. Following their loss in the game, England have been eliminated from the race of the semi-finals.

In Group A, the picture is much clearer, with New Zealand and India securing their places in the semi-finals. Bangladesh and Pakistan occupy the last two spots with zero points so far. New Zealand and India will face off in Dubai on March 2 to determine the group leader.

ICC Champions Trophy: Most runs

England’s Ben Duckett continues to lead the run-scorers’ chart with 203 runs in the tournament. Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran’s historic knock of 177 runs in the game has pushed him to the second spot with 194 runs in two games.

England’s Joe Root is now placed third with a tally of 188 runs, while New Zealand’s Tom Latham is placed fourth with 173 runs. Indian vice-captain Shubman Gill closes the list of top five with 147 runs.

New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell’s four-wicket haul against Bangladesh places him at the top of the wicket-takers leaderboard with five wickets. New Zealand’s William O’Rourke and India’s Mohammed Shami are placed second and third with five wickets each.

Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai takes the fourth spot with five wickets, while Indian fast bowler Harshit Rana is placed fifth with four wickets in the tournament.
