ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Virat Kohli becomes 2nd batsman to complete 8000 ODI runs while chasing

Virat Kohli scored his 74th ODI half-century in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against Australia.

The first semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 between India and Australia is currently underway at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

Australian captain Steve Smith won the toss and elected to bat first. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Australia posted 264 runs in the first innings. Steve Smith (73) and Alex Carey (61) held the fort for Australia, while Mohammed Shami starred for India with three wickets.

In reply, India lost openers Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma early, slipping to 43/2 inside the batting powerplay. The Indian innings was then stabilized by Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, who joined forces to stitch a 91-run partnership for the third wicket.

Kohli not only registered his 74th ODI half-century during his stay, but also completed 8,000 ODI runs while batting in second innings.

He has joined Sachin Tendulkar in the elite list and has become the second batsman to complete 8,000 ODI runs while chasing. The Little Master scored 8,720 runs in run chases during his 23-year career.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma is third on the elite list with 6,115 runs. Sanath Jayasuriya and Jacques Kallis hold the fourth and fifth spots for most ODI runs while chasing, with tallies of 5,742 and 5,575 runs respectively.

At the time of writing, India are 161/3 in 32 overs. Virat Kohli (62) and Axar Patel (17) are at the crease for the Men in Blue.
