ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Will India qualify for the semi-finals if their last Super 8 match against Australia gets washed out due to rain?

The India vs Australia Super 8 match will be played at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, St Lucia on June 24.

Rain threat looms large on the India vs Australia ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8s match. This match is to be played at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia on June 24, Monday.

Australia’s projections of reaching the T20 World Cup semifinals were severely hindered by a devastating 21-run loss to Afghanistan in their recent Super 8 encounter. India have four points following a win over Bangladesh and, due to their positive Net Run Rate, have a chance to advance to the semi-finals.

Australia and Afghanistan have two points each. If Australia beat India, they will have four points and should advance to the semi-finals, even if Afghanistan defeat Bangladesh and tie Australia on points.

But in case Australia lose to India on Monday, and then Afghanistan defeat Bangladesh as well, the Mitchell Marsh-led Kangaroos will be left with 2 points only and then India and Afghanistan will proceed to the semi-finals.

What if rain washes out India v Australia Super 8s match in St. Lucia?  

Apart from the above-mentioned scenarios, there is another facet to the whole semi-finals qualification criteria. According to the weather forecast, the conditions are expected to be overcast with a possibility of thunderstorms on Monday.

As per forecast, there is 51% chance of rain at 10 am local time, when the India v Australia match is to begin in St. Lucia.

And if rain washes out the game in St. Lucia, both India and Australia will share one point each. This will make the Men in Blue end Super 8 stage with five points and they’ll make through to the semi-finals. However, Australia will end up having three points and will rely on result of clash between Afghanistan and Bangladesh in order to make it to the semi-finals.

If Australia end with three points in Super 8 round and Afghanistan win their final match against Bangladesh, Afghanistan will end up having four points and make it to the semi-finals. However, if Bangladesh emerge victorious against Afghanistan, both the sides will conclude Super 8 round with two points each and Australia will go through to the semis with three points, only next to India.
