The Super 8 round of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will get underway on June 19.

After the group stage round, the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is set to enter its next stage – Super Eight. The tournament that is being hosted by the USA and West Indies got underway on June 1, and both the hosts have qualified for the next round of the competition.

The 20 teams – which is the most that have participated in the main tournament of any men’s ICC T20 World Cup – contested in the group stage across 40 matches across USA and West Indies. Four groups were made of five teams each. From each group, the top two teams have progressed to the Super Eight stage, while the rest 12 teams have been eliminated.

A number of teams in the Super Eight round are the ones who were expected to breeze through the group stage – such as India, Australia and South Africa. However, there are a few teams who have shockingly been eliminated after disappointing shows in the group stage, such as Pakistan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

These eight teams have qualified for the Super Eight round: India, USA, Australia, England, Afghanistan, West Indies, South Africa and Bangladesh.

One thing that has baffled many about the grouping in the Super Eight round is that the seedings of these teams had already been pre-decided by the ICC, irrespective of whether they finished first or second in their respective groups. For example, it was already finalized by the organisers prior to the tournament’s start that should India and Australia qualify for the next round, they would be grouped together in the Super Eight.

This meant that there was no advantage or incentive for a team to finish at the top in their group, making some of the games dead rubber.
