ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Predicting 8 teams which can qualify for Super 8 round
20 teams are participating in the Group Stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, out of which eight teams will move into the Super 8 round.
The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 got underway on June 1 in Dallas. The tournament is being jointly hosted by USA and West Indies; this is the first time the USA is hosting a major ICC tournament.
The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is the biggest edition of the competition in terms of the number of teams participating. There are 20 teams participating in the main tournament.
The first round at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is group stage, where 20 teams are grouped into four groups, each group consisting of five teams. The top two teams from each group will proceed to the Super 8 round, where the eight teams will be grouped into two groups of four each.
The top two sides from each of the two groups in the Super 8 round will advance to the semi-final. The final is slated for June 29 in Barbados.
In this article, we will predict the teams that are likely to qualify from each of the four groups to the Super 8 round.
Predicting the eight teams who could qualify for the Super 8 round of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024:
Group A – India and Pakistan
It will be one of the biggest shocks in T20 World Cup history if either India or Pakistan don’t proceed to the Super 8 round given their opponents in Group A are the USA, Canada and Ireland.
India and Pakistan have won the T20 World Cup once each, and have the tools to add a second title this year. They are expected to breeze through this group. However, their biggest challenge among the three other teams in the group would come from Ireland, whose bowlers could exploit the pace-friendly conditions in New York and stun the two Asian sides.
Nonetheless, India and Pakistan should be the top two teams in Group A; if either of them is not, then we are in for a huge shock.
Group B – England and Australia
Just like Group A, Group B is also easy to predict: England and Australia are expected to thump Namibia, Oman and Scotland.
England are the defending champions while Australia won the tournament in 2021. Both teams are filled with T20 match-winners. Both teams include multiple quality all-rounders and that makes them two of the strongest title contenders.
Group C – New Zealand and Afghanistan
Group C is a really tough group to predict two outright best teams. It includes New Zealand, Afghanistan, West Indies, Papua New Guinea and Uganda.
New Zealand, who have reached the final and semi-final of the last two T20 World Cups, are favourites to top the group.
Picking the stronger team between Afghanistan and West Indies here is a challenging task. Both teams are filled with T20 specialists. Although West Indies do have the home advantage, they looked in all sorts of trouble with the bat against PNG. On the other hand, Afghanistan started their campaign with a 125-run win over Uganda.
At the World Cup 2023 in India, Afghanistan recorded two famous wins over Pakistan and England. Their bowlers have experience of playing in the CPL as well. Afghanistan have three of the best T20 spinners in their side. We have gone with Rashid Khan’s team to advance to the Super 8 round ahead of West Indies.
Group D – South Africa and Netherlands
South Africa are clear favourites to top Group D, while few would give any chance to Nepal to come second in the group ahead of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the Netherlands.
Sri Lanka looked jaded and under-prepared in their loss against South Africa. Bangladesh are coming into the tournament having lost a T20I series to the USA.
The Netherlands started their campaign with a win over Nepal, in which their pacers and spinners both starred. The Dutch had even defeated South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2022. Their bowlers could be really effective in the conditions their remaining matches will be played.
