With this victory over Australia, Afghanistan remain alive in the semi-finals race in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
In match number 48 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Afghanistan created history by registering their first-ever win over Australia in international cricket across formats. This win has kept them alive in the semi-final race and also left Australia nervous ahead of their clash against the undefeated Team India.
The AFG vs AUS match on Saturday night in St Vincent ended with Rashid Khan’s team claiming a 21-run victory after posting 148 runs on the board.
The two Afghan openers, Ibrahim Zadram and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, put on an impressive opening partnership of 118 runs in 15.5 overs before a few boundaries from Karim Janat and Mohammad Nabi took the side two runs short of 150.
In the chase, Australia lost Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh early to Naveen-ul-Haq before losing David Warner to Nabi. The out-of-form Glenn Maxwell returned to form through a 59-run knock, however, once he was dismissed by Gulbadin Naib, Afghanistan ensured the match ended in their pocket. Naib took a four-wicket haul and bagged the Man of the Match award.
ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Super 8 Points Table
Group 1
Both groups are having a three-way race to the semi-finals. In Group 1, Afghanistan’s victory has opened up the possibility of Australia getting knocked out if they lose to India and Afghanistan defeat Bangladesh.
India are at the top of the standings with a healthy net run rate of +2.425. India must ensure they don’t lose by a big margin against Australia. Australia are second and Afghanistan third, both with two points each. Afghanistan will face Bangladesh after India and Australia have played each other.
Group 2
In Group 2, although South Africa lead the points table right now, they could be knocked out if England defeated USA by a margin that pips over the Proteas’ NRR and Markram’s side loses to West Indies.
West Indies and England have had one victory so far, but since West Indies have a much better NRR than England and South Africa, they just need to defeat the Proteas to advance to the semi-finals.
