USA hosted 16 matches of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 including those of Indian cricket team.

The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 saw India becoming T20 world champions for the second time, but at the same time, the ICC reportedly suffered an INR 167 crores loss for hosting the tournament partially in the United States of America (USA).

The 2024 T20 World Cup saw 16 matches of the tournament being hosted by the USA in three stadiums in Dallas, Texas, New York and Florida. While the matches in Texas went without any hitch, the matches in the temporarily built stadium in New York featuring India received criticism for poor pitch and outfield.

The New York project was among the most ambitious the ICC has undertaken with the venue built from scratch in 106 days. However, the PTI report has revealed that the International Cricket Council (ICC) lost around USD 20 million (Rs 167 crores) while hosting the T20 World Cup 2024 games in the USA.

The T20 World Cup took place mostly in the United States, with the eagerly awaited India-Pakistan match taking place in New York.

In an attempt to increase cricket’s worldwide appeal, the ICC decided to hold important matches in the USA, but this choice came with unforeseen financial consequences.  A board official stated that the initial budget agreed by the ICC Board for the USA portion of the event was between $40 and $50 million.

According to the director, the initial estimate included around $30 million for the construction of the temporary stadium outside of New York City and $15 million for operating expenses.

However, the commercial division of ICC submitted a request for an extra $20 million the night before the competition. A second director said that this “outraged and alarmed” several board directors, not least since the request was made so last-minute. Several directors expressed reservations about the inflated expenditure leading to the request for the loan.

CWI President Dr Kishore Shallow, ICC deputy chairman Imran Khwaja, and Pankaj Khimji are believed to have sent an email last week to the ICC calling for an investigation into the US leg.
