South Africa will play their first match of ICC T20 World Cup 2024 on June 3.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) named a 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 on April 30. The upcoming global event will be played in the West Indies and the USA in June.
Right-handed batter Aiden Markram will lead the Proteas. South Africa had failed to reach the semi-finals in the previous edition of the T20 World Cup, in 2022 in Australia, under the captaincy of Temba Bavuma.
The selection committee has made some bold moves while picking the 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Former skipper Temba Bavuma has been ignored by the selectors. Apart from Bavuma, Rilee Rossouw and Wayne Parnell are other players who were part of the competition two years ago but were not selected for this year’s event. Further, right-arm pacer Lungi Ngidi is not in the 15-man squad but has been placed in the reserves.
After performing impressively in the World Cup 2023 and in the Indian Premier League (IPL), young speedster Gerald Coetzee earned his maiden T20 World Cup call-up for South Africa.
The squad also features talented players who performed superbly in the SA20 league. Ryan Rickelton and Ottniel Baartman, who had a good run in the SA20, have been picked by the selection committee for the T20 World Cup 2024.
