India registered their first win in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

In the high-voltage IND-W vs PAK-W clash at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in Dubai, Harmanpreet Kaur’s team emerged victorious by six wickets on Sunday.

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana won the toss and elected to bat first. Both teams had to make one change each due to injuries.

India started off brilliantly with the ball as Renuka Singh castled Gull Feroza. Muneeba Ali cracked a couple of boundaries, but saw Sidra Amin and Omaima Sohail get out to Deepti Sharma and Arundhati Reddy respectively.

Under pressure now, Muneeba jumped out of her crease to Shreyanka Patil but got stumped for 17. After 10 overs, Pakistan were 41/4.

Pakistan got a push on the scoreboard through veteran Nida Dar’s efforts of 28 runs off 34 balls. However, she didn’t get much support from any of her teammates. Apart from Dar, no Pakistani batter scored over 20 as their innings ended at 105/8.

For India, Reddy picked up three wickets and Patil snared a couple of scalps.

In the chase, India, like Pakistan, were slow to start off as they managed only 25 runs in the powerplay while losing senior opener Smriti Mandhana to Sadia Iqbal. Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues then had a crucial partnership of 43 (44) that got their chase on track. Verma scored 32 (35) and Rodrigues scored 23 (28),

But India then lost three wickets for 19 runs, leaving captain Harmanpreet Kaur with the job of taking the side over the line. Kaur took India near the target with 29* (24) but had to retire hurt.

Australia continue to be at the top of Group A, followed by New Zealand. Both teams won their first match.

With this win, India, who had lost to New Zealand by 58 runs, opened their account in the points table, although they would liked to have a victory with a bigger margin. Pakistan had won their first game against Sri Lanka by 31 runs, but suffered a defeat in their second match. Both of them are in the middle with Sri Lanka at the bottom.

In Group B, England and South Africa lead the group after one win in one match each, followed by Bangladesh, who have a win and a loss. West Indies and Scotland lost their opening matches.
