India defeated Australia in Perth test by 295 runs to reclaim the top spot in ICC WTC 2023-25 standings.
The first test between Australia and India, that was played in Perth, saw the visitors winning by 295 runs. It was a brilliant comeback by the Indian team after the first innings debacle where they were bowled out for 150 runs.
Jasprit Bumrah had won the toss as the stand-in captain in Rohit Sharma’s absence and chose to bat first. But, Josh Hazlewood’s four wickets and two wickets each by Mitchell Marsh, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc, kept India to a low total.
Debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy top-scored for India with 41, while Rishabh Pant made 37 runs.
Much was expected from the Australian batting lineup, but they couldn’t withstand the brilliance of Jasprit Bumrah. At the end of day one, Australia were reduced to 67/7 with Bumrah taking four wickets.
Some resistance from the tailenders took Australia to 104 runs, while Bumrah picked 5/30 and debutant Harshit Rana took 3 wickets.
In their second innings, Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul showed patience and hammered the bad balls. They stitched a record 201 runs for the first wicket with KL Rahul falling for 77 runs. Jaiswal continued and made 161, his fourth test ton and first in Australia.
Virat Kohli then joined in the fun and hammered 100* in 143 balls as Jasprit Bumrah declared India’s innings at 487/6. The Australian batters failed again as they were 12/3 at the end of day three.
Though Travis Head (89), Mitchell Marsh (47), and Alex Carey (36) showed some resilience, the Indian bowlers bundled Australia out for 238 and won the Perth test by 295 runs. Jasprit Bumrah was once again the star with three wickets, while Mohammed Siraj also scalped three.
