Despite suffering a defeat in Bengaluru, India are still at the top of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 standings.
New Zealand displayed a clinical performance in Bengaluru as they thrashed the Indian cricket team by eight wickets in the opening match of the three-match test series. This is a historic win for New Zealand, as it is their first test match win in India since 1988 and only their third on Indian soil.
The visitors have taken a 1-0 lead in the ongoing test series, with two games to go.
Talking about the match, day 1 of the test was called off due to persistent rain. The game began on Day 2, with Indian captain Rohit Sharma opting to bat first in bowling-friendly conditions.
Sharma’s decision backfired horribly as the Asian Giants were blown away for their third-lowest total (46) in test cricket. New Zealand speedster Matt Henry produced a brilliant bowling performance as he picked up a five-wicket in the first innings.
The visitors then, through terrific batting performances from Rachin Ravindra (134), Devon Conway (91) and Tim Southee (65), posted 402 runs in their first innings, taking a lead of 356 runs.
In India’s second innings, the hosts displayed a great fightback. Captain Rohit Sharma (52) and Virat Kohli (70) played crucial knocks. Middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan played a superb hand of 150 runs while Rishabh Pant was dismissed for 99 runs.
The hosts were in control, but they slipped from 408-4 to 462-10 after New Zealand took the second new ball. India set a target of 107 runs, which the Kiwis chased down with eight wickets in hand through Will unbeaten knocks from Will Young (48) and Rachin Ravindra (39).
