Sri Lanka slipped to sixth place in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 points table after losing the 1st SL vs AUS test.

The first test between Sri Lanka and Australia, which was played at Galle International Stadium, ended with the visitors winning by an innings 242 runs.

Australia’s stand-in captain, Steve Smith, won the toss and chose to bat first. Australia’s top-order batsmen set a strong foundation, which helped the side post a big total of 654/6 in their first innings. Usman Khawaja hit his career-best score of 232, while Steve Smith scored his 35th test century.

Debutant Josh Inglis made history, scoring a counter-attacking 102 off 94 balls, including 10 fours and a six. Prabath Jayasuriya and Jeffrey Vandersay toiled hard for the hosts, taking three wickets each.

Sri Lanka couldn’t match Australia’s strong batting performance, falling to just 165 in their first innings. Dinesh Chandimal top-scored with 72 off 139 balls, while Matthew Kuhnemann impressed for Australia, taking 5/63 in 18.2 overs.

Having a huge 489-run lead in the first innings, Australia enforced the follow-on to try to finish the game before the fifth day of the match when rain is forecasted. The hosts again struggled, managing just 247 in their second innings.

Jeffrey Vandersay scored a half-century (53), while Nathan Lyon and Matthew Kuhnemann took four wickets each to seal the win for Australia.
