ICC World Test Championship 2023-25: Updated points table after 2nd SL vs NZ test 2024

Sri Lanka are placed third in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 standings.

After winning the second test by an innings and 154 runs, hosts Sri Lanka whitewashed New Zealand 2-0 in the two-match test series at the Galle International Stadium.

After electing to bat first, Sri Lanka batters Dinesh Chandimal (116), Kamindu Mendis (182*), and wicket-keeper batter Kusal Mendis (106*) struck centuries and guided the hosts to a massive score of 602-5 before declaring. For New Zealand, Glenn Phillips took three wickets in the first innings.

In reply, New Zealand were rocked by Sri Lanka’s spin-bowling attack. The Black Caps were bundled out for just 88 runs. Mitchell Santner top scored with 29 runs for New Zealand, while left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya claimed a six-wicket haul and off-spinner Nishan Peiris took three wickets.

With the threat of rain around and a huge lead, Sri Lanka enforced follow-on.

In their second innings, New Zealand batters performed better. Opener Devon Conway (61), wicket-keeper batter Tom Blundell (60), Glenn Phillips (78), and Mitchell Santer (51) registered half-centuries, but still couldn’t drag the match into the fourth innings. Peiris’ five-wicket haul helped the hosts bundle out New Zealand for 360 and win the match by an innings and 154 runs.

Following the win in the second test, Sri Lanka are now placed third in the ICC WTC 2023-25 standings, having five victories in nine outings. Their PCT (percentage of points won) currently is 55.56.

On the other hand, New Zealand slipped down to seventh place with five losses in eight matches. Their PCT currently is 37.50.

Meanwhile, India are comfortably placed at the top of the standings, having won seven out of 10 tests. Their PCT currently is 71.67. Australia are placed second with eight wins in 12 games and PCT of 62.50.

England, Bangladesh, and South Africa are ranked fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively. Pakistan and the West Indies are languishing at the bottom of the ICC WTC 2023-25 standings.
