ICC World Test Championship 2023-25: Updated points table after 1st SL vs NZ test 2024

Sri Lanka jumped to third place in the latest ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 standings.

Sri Lanka won first match of the two-match test series against New Zealand by 63 runs at the Galle International Stadium, Galle, on September 23.

Batting first, Sri Lankan all-rounder Kamindu Mendis played a stunning knock, where he scored 114 runs off 173 deliveries, including 11 fours. The hosts were all out for 305 runs after New Zealand speedster William O’Rourke took five wickets.

In reply, Tom Latham (70), Kane Williamson (55), and Daryl Mitchell (57) slammed respective half-centuries to get New Zealand to 340 runs. Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya took four wickets in the first innings.

In Sri Lanka’s second innings, opener Dimuth Karunaratne played a fighting knock and scored 83 runs to guide the hosts to 309 runs and set a target of 274 runs for the visitors. For the Kiwis, Ajaz Patel took a six-wicket haul in.

While chasing a stiff target, New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra played a vital knock of 92 runs. However, other batters couldn’t convert their starts as the visitors were bundled out for 211 runs. Sri Lanka won the opening test by 63 runs after their spinner Prabath Jayasuriya picked up five wickets in the second innings.

Prabath Jayasuriya was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance with the ball in Galle.

After winning the opening test of the two-match test series against New Zealand, Sri Lanka jumped to third position with four victories in eight matches. Their PCT currently is 50.00 in the latest ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 standings.

After losing the Galle test, New Zealand slipped down to fourth place with three victories in seven games. Their PCT currently is 42.86.

India, who won the first test against Bangladesh in Chennai, are comfortably sitting at the top with seven wins in 10 matches. Their PCT currently is 71.67. Australia are ranked second with eight wins in 12 matches. Their PCT currently is 62.50 in the latest ICC WTC 2023-25 standings.

Meanwhile, England and Bangladesh are placed at fifth and sixth positions respectively. England’s PCT is 42.19, whereas Bangladesh’s PCT is 39.29.

South Africa, Pakistan, and the West Indies are the bottom three teams in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 standings.
