India’s road to the ICC WTC final has got a lot tougher with the loss in Adelaide.
After the highs of Perth, where India won by 295 runs, the Asian giants suffered the lows of Adelaide once again as they were thumped convincingly by Australia in the 2nd BGT 2024-25 test.
Australia levelled the series 1-1 on day 3 in Adelaide, and the five-test rubber has got even more exciting now.
Although India received a boost in the return of captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, the batting remained brittle. Unlike the second innings in Perth, no one could bail the side out this time.
Rohit won the toss and elected to bat first. Mitchell Starc ran through the Indian batting order to register his best test innings bowling figures of 6/48, as the visitors were bundled out for only 180 runs.
For Australia, Marnus Labuschagne returned among runs and registered a half-century but the star of the innings was Travis Head, who blasted a blistering ton, scoring 140 runs off 141 balls with 17 fours and four sixes.
Australia ended with a first-innings lead of 157 runs, which proved almost too much for India. The visitors were bowled out for 175 runs in their second innings with Pat Cummins taking a five-wicket haul and Starc and Boland sharing the other five wickets.
Chasing the target of 19 runs was a mere formality in a contest that had been decided by the end of the second day already.

With this result in Adelaide, Australia climbed back to the No. 1 spot in the ICC WTC points table, and India slipped to No. 3. Australia have a PCT of 60.71 and India’s PCT dropped to 57.29. South Africa have a PCT of 59.26. Currently, Australia and South Africa, given their form, are favorites to reach the ICC WTC 2025 final.
Sri Lanka, with PCT 50.00, are in still in contention. They are in the fourth spot.
England are fifth with 45.24 PCT, and though they hammered New Zealand in the first two tests of the three-match series, Ben Stokes’ team has a very slim chance only of making it to the final. New Zealand’s PCT has been dented to 44.23.
Pakistan, Bangladesh and West Indies occupy the last three spots respectively in the ICC WTC points table.
