Australia are now one step closer to qualify for the ICC WTC 2023-25 final.

Australia took an unassailable 2-1 lead in the five-match test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 with one test to go with a 184-run victory at the MCG on Monday.

Australia overcame India’s spirited bowling performance on day 4 and a gritty partnership between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant on day 5 to secure a win in the Boxing day test. India can still retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which they have held since the 2017 home series, if they win the fifth test in Sydney.

India were set a target of 340 runs on day 5. They started off poorly, losing Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli for 33 runs in the first session.

Pant and Jaiswal forged a strong rearguard and batted the entire second session. But their stand of 88 (197) was broken at the start of the third session when Pant played a unnecessary pull shot off part-timer Travis Head and was caught at wide long-on.

That opened the floodgates for Australia to barge through in. Pat Cummins got Jaiswal for 84 with a bouncer, effectively killing India’s hopes of an escape. Australia won the test with 12.5 overs left.

With this win, Australia’s PCT shot up to 61.46, while India’s fell to 52.78. Defending champions Australia have inched a lot closer to their second consecutive WTC final.

Topping the list are South Africa, who have already qualified for the final of this cycle’s ICC WTC.

India have only one more test match left in this cycle – the fifth test vs Australia in Sydney. Pat Cummins’ team will then play a two-test series in Sri Lanka, who are fifth in the table with 45.45 PCT. New Zealand are fourth with 48.21. England have PCT 43.18 and are sixth in the standings.

Bangladesh, Pakistan and West Indies occupy the bottom three places in the ICC WTC 2023-25 points table.
