ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 Points Table after 1st test, Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka 2024

Sri Lanka registered their first win in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle.

Sri Lanka overcame adversity against Bangladesh in the first test between the two sides which was played in Sylhet. Digging themselves out of trouble thanks to captain Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis, Sri Lanka went on to defeat Bangladesh by a massive 328 runs.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and chose to field first. His bowlers had Sri Lanka tottering at 57/5 before skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis scored 102 runs each and added 202 runs for the sixth wicket as Sri Lanka posted 280 runs.

In reply, Sri Lankan bowlers starred with the ball as Bangladesh were bowled out for 188 runs with Taijul Islam top-scoring with 47 runs. For Sri Lanka, Viswa Fernando picked 4/48, while Lahiru Kumara and Kasun Rajitha took three wickets apiece.  

Then in the second innings, Dimuth Karunaratne made 57, but once more Dhananjaya de Silva (108) and Kamindu Mendis (164) scored their second centuries of the match as Sri Lanka made 418 runs, setting Bangladesh 511 runs to win.

However, only Mominul Haque stood tall with 87* as other Bangla batters surrendered against Kasun Rajitha, who picked a fifer. Bangladesh were bundled out for 182 runs and lost the first test by 328 runs to go 1-0 down in the two-match test series.

After this brilliant win, Sri Lanka moved level with Bangladesh at the 6th spot in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 points table. Both the teams have played 3 tests, winning one and losing two. They have 12 points each and 33.33 PCT.

India rein on the top with 6 wins from 9 tests and a PCT of 68.51. Australia are at No. 2 with a PCT of 62.50 with 8 wins from 12 test matches. New Zealand are at the third spot with 3 wins and 3 losses from 6 test matches and a PCT of 50.
