England are placed fourth in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 points table.

Veteran batter Joe Root’s unbeaten 62-run knock guided hosts England to a five-wicket win in the opening fixture of the three-match test series against Sri Lanka at the Old Trafford, Manchester on August 24.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Sri Lanka made 236 runs in their first innings. Skipper Dhananjaya de Silva (74) and Milan Rathnayake (72) added valuable runs for the visitors. England’s Chris Woakes and Shoaib Bashir bagged three wickets each in the first innings.

In reply, the hosts hammered 358 runs in their first innings with help of a stunning century from wicket-keeper batter Jamie Smith (111) and took a 122-run lead. Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando took four wickets in his 18-over spell in the first innings.

The visitors made a good comeback in second innings as they notched up 326 runs and set a target of 205 runs for the hosts. Dinesh Chandimal (79 runs) and Kamindu Mendis (113 runs) were the top scorers for their side.

While chasing, former England captain Joe Root played a gritty unbeaten knock of 62 runs, whereas wicket-keeper batter Jamie Smith added 39 runs, which helped the hosts chase down the target in 57.2 overs.

England won the first test in Manchester by five wickets. Wicket-keeper batter Jamie Smith was adjudged Player of the Match for his brilliant show with the bat in the game.

The ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 points table saw some changes following the first test between England and Sri Lanka in Manchester.

The England cricket team jumped to fourth place with seven wins in 14 matches. Their PCT currently is 41.07. Sri Lanka, with two wins and three losses, are placed fifth. Their PCT is currently is 40.00.

Meanwhile, India and Australia are the top two ranked sides in the ongoing WTC cycle. Both nations are favourites to reach the final of the ICC tournament.

New Zealand are ranked third with three wins and as many losses. Their PCT currently is 50.00. South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh and West Indies are the bottom four teams in the ongoing World Test Championship Cycle.
