Australia have jumped to third spot in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 points table.
Australia have continued their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 journey well. After retaining the Ashes in England, they have done well at home also. Australia had defeated Pakistan by 360 runs in the first Test at Perth of the three-match series. And now they have taken a 2-0 lead in the three-match Test series, by defeating Pakistani in the second Test in Perth. This match was played at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Australia had batted first after Shan Masood won the toss and opted to field. The hosts put up 318 with Marnus Labuschagne top-scoring with 68, while Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Marsh scored 42 and 41 respectively. Pakistan also gave 52 extra runs. Aamer Jamal continued to impress with 3/64.
In response, Abdullah Shafique (62) and Shan Masood (54) led the Pakistani fightback as they posted 264 runs in their first innings. Pat Cummins took 5/48 and Nathan Lyon took 4/73 for Australia.
Pakistan had a good chance to put pressure on Australia when they reduced them to 16/4 in the second innings. But Mitchell Marsh (96), Alex Carey (53), and Steve Smith (50) led the charge to take Australia to 262 runs.
Set 317 to win their first Test in Australia since 1995, Shan Masood led the innings with 60, while Agha Salman made 50. But the big knock didn’t come that Pakistan was hoping for as Pat Cummins picked another fifer, taking 5/49, completing 10 wickets in the match. Mitchell Starc took 4/55 as Pakistan folded for 237.
Australia won the Test by 79 runs and went 2-0 up in the three-match Test series. The third Test will be played in Sydney from January 3.
