ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 Points Table after 2nd Test, England vs Sri Lanka 2024
England have strengthened their position in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 points table with two consecutive wins against Sri Lanka.
It has been a dream game for the English pacer Gus Atkinson, who has registered a rare combo of a century and five-wicket haul in the same match at the Lord’s to help England win the second game. With this, Ollie Pope has also won his debut series as English captain, with one more game to be played.
Joe Root also carried on his form and registered two centuries in both innings of the game to put his name in an elite list of players with twin centuries at the Lord’s. After beating Sri Lanka by five wickets in the first game, England didn’t let them get an inch in the second game as well.
The hosts outplayed the Islanders in both departments and registered a win by 190 runs to bag yet another home series win. Sri Lanka didn’t look like challenging the hosts at any point of the game and surrendered in the second innings while chasing a big target of 482 runs.
England stayed in control from the very first innings where they scored 427 runs with centuries from Root (143) and Atkinson (118). Sri Lanka could only reach 196 runs and conceded a big lead of 231 runs. The visitors bowled on the second innings and restricted England to 251 runs.
Root slammed his 34th ton and made 103 runs. He also overtook Alastair Cook’s record for most test tons by an England batter in the game. In the end, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 292 while chasing 483 runs. Gus Atkinson was awarded Man of the Match award for his all-round performance in the game.
