ENG vs IND first test, which is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27, took place at Headingley in Leeds.

The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 campaign for the Indian Cricket Team and the England Cricket Team kicked off with the first game of the five-match series. The game took place at Headingley in Leeds and saw five days of enthralling cricket between the teams.

The England Cricket Team displayed a magnificent effort with the bat and ball and clinched the first game of the series with five wickets in hand. After opting to field first, they didn’t have a great outing with the ball as Indian batters made full use of the good batting conditions and piled up a massive total.

Opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal (101), skipper Shubman Gill (147) and vice-captain Rishabh Pant (134) showed a sensational batting display, making England bowlers look clueless. Based on their effort, India posted a mammoth total of 471 runs on the board. Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue bagged four wickets each.

England then came up with an equally incredible effort with the bat as Ollie Pope (106) slammed a vital ton to save his place in the team. He was well supported by Harry Brook (99) while contributions from the lower order powered the hosts to a total of 465, trailing by just six runs.

In the second innings, India had another great outing as KL Rahul (137) and Rishabh Pant (118) slammed tons. Their vital effort took the Shubman Gill-led side to a total of 364 runs, setting a target of 371 runs for England to chase.

In the chase, Zak Crawley (65) and Ben Duckett (149) gave a tough time to Indian bowlers. They batted brilliantly and added 188 runs for the opening partnership and set a great platform for the others. Duckett, in particular, looked threatening as he slammed a brutal century and made Indian bowlers look clueless.

However, Prasidh Krishna brought his team back in the game with two quick wickets before Shardul Thakur also bagged two scalps. With the team under pressure, Ben Stokes (33), along with Joe Root, added 49 runs for the fifth wicket. Root (53*) slammed a vital fifty and batted till the end. Jamie Smith (44*) supported him well as England chased the target with five wickets in hand.
