The first test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 ended in a draw.

The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 kicked off with the test series between the Sri Lanka Cricket Team and the Bangladesh Cricket Team. The first game of the series between the teams concluded on Saturday (21st July) at the Galle International Cricket Stadium in Galle. 

Bangladesh, who won the toss and opted to bat first, had a brilliant outing in the first innings. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto led from the front and slammed a magnificent century, scoring 148 runs off 279 balls, at a time when his team was under pressure after the loss of three quick wickets. 

He got great support from veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored 163 runs, as the duo added 264 runs for the fourth wicket. After that, Litton Das (90) also played a brilliant innings and based on their blistering efforts, Bangladesh posted a mammoth total of 495 runs on the board in the first innings. 

Sri Lanka responded strongly with the bat with opener Pathum Nisanka (187) hitting a big hundred. Dinesh Chandimal (54) and Kamindu Mendis (87) scored fifties while handy contributions from other batters took the home team to a total of 485 runs in their first innings. 

In the second innings, Najmul Hossain Shanto (125*) slammed his second century of the game. While Shadman Islam (76) and Mushfiqur Rahim (49) contributed as well as Bangladesh posted a total of 285 runs in the second innings to set a target of 296 runs. 

Sri Lanka batted positively in the chase but lost four wickets for 72 for four. However, the time didn’t allow the game to go any further as the match ended in a draw.

With the game ending in a draw, Bangladesh moved to the top spot in the ICC World Test Championship points table. Sri Lanka are there at two with same PCT of 33.33 and four points under their belt. The rest of the teams are yet to open their account in this edition of the tournament.
