New Zealand have a poor test record against India in India.

As India gear up to face New Zealand in their upcoming three-match test series, the Kiwis will be aiming to reverse their historically poor record in India.

While New Zealand are a strong side at home, they have struggled to find success away, especially in India. With spin-friendly pitches in India, winning on Indian soil has always been a massive challenge for the Kiwis.

Coming into this series, the Black Caps have a major hurdle in front, as their star batsman Kane Williamson is set to miss the first game due to injury. Williamson’s absence is a significant blow for the Kiwis, given his experience and expertise in spin-friendly Indian conditions.

How many test matches have New Zealand won in India?

Out of the 36 test matches played between India and New Zealand on Indian soil, the Kiwis have only tasted victory twice. Their two wins in India came in 1969 in Nagpur and in 1988 in Mumbai.

The Black Caps’ first victory in India came on October 3, 1969, during the second test of their tour. Batting first, New Zealand finished with a score of 296, with Mark Burgess and captain Graham Dowling posting half-centuries.

In reply, India’s Syed Abid Ali and Ambar Roy led their side to 257. New Zealand, after scoring 214 in their second innings and setting the target of 277, were excellent with the ball as they dismissed the Indian team for 109 runs, winning the game by 167 runs.

It took nearly two decades for the Kiwis to repeat their success in India. Their second win came in Mumbai on November 24, 1988. After an invaluable 76-run partnership between John Bracewell and Danny Morrison, New Zealand posted a competitive first-innings score of 236.

Indian batsmen almost matched New Zealand’s efforts with their total of 234, giving the Kiwis a small two-run lead.

The visitors, with the help of a few handy middle-order contributions, set India the target of 282. In response Indian batsmen struggled and could only manage 145, handing New Zealand their second victory in India. That was the last time the Kiwis registered a test match win in India, and they have been waiting for the same for 36 years.
