India secured a big win against Afghanistan (IND vs AFG) in the one-off Test. Shubman Gill and Co. defeated them by an innings and 300 runs. This is India’s biggest win margin so far in Test cricket.
Both teams clashed at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh. This match was also the first red-ball international match to be played at this ground.
The match started on June 6, with India opting to bat first against Afghanistan. India batted till half an hour before tea on Day 2. In the meantime, they posted a score of 564 on the board.
This included the leadership duo KL Rahul and Shubman Gill registering their 12th and 11th Test hundreds, respectively. Gill’s innings took him past the 1000-run mark as a captain, achieving the feat in merely 15 innings. Meanwhile, Sai Sudharsan and Rishabh Pant scored 81 runs each.
On Day 2, with significant contributions from Washington Sundar (52*), Manav Suthar (28), and Mohammad Siraj (22), India posted a mammoth total of 564 for Afghanistan. Mohammad Saleem picked his first six-wicket haul against the Men-in-Blue, dismissing key batsmen of the side.
India declared their innings just short of the Tea break on Day 2, and invited the Afghanistan players to bat. With the opening spell from Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, both wicketless, Manav Suthar got India their first breakthrough.
What followed was a three-wicket haul for the debutant on Day 2, and the day’s play ended with Afghanistan five down.
On Day 3, India dismissed the remaining Afghan batsmen, and then enforced the follow-on. They wrapped up the game in the third session, with the spinners doing the job for India. The star Indian debutant, Manav Suthar, was the player of the match.
