India trial by 310 runs after day 2 of the IND vs AUS fourth test at the MCG.
Day 2 of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 test at the MCG belonged to Australia as India failed to seize their chance with the bat.
Steve Smith, who was 68* at stumps on day 1, batted even more sublimely here than he did at the Gabba and notched up his 11th test century against India, the most any batsman has against the Asian giants. The former Aussie skipper ended with 140 off 197 balls, guiding Australia to a big first innings total of 474.
In reply, India captain Rohit Sharma opened the innings after spending the last two tests in the middle-order but failed once again, getting out for only three runs. KL Rahul was the next to go for 24 runs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli steadied the innings with a stand of 102 runs but the young left-hander got run out for 82. Kohli was dismissed for 36 runs as India collapsed, with nightwatchman Akash Deep getting out before stumps.
At the end of day 2 in Melbourne, India are 164/5, trialing by 310 more runs.
