76.4 overs were bowled on day 1 of the 1st IND vs AUS test in Perth.

Pace and bounce was the predicted theme for the first IND vs AUS test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 at the Optus Stadium in Perth. But not many would have anticipated the treacherous batting conditions to go such extreme that 17 wickets would fall and only 181 runs would be scored.

The BGT 2024-25 kicked off on a compelling note as pacers ran riot throughout the day. Seam movement dominated the day which saw 17 dismissals, the highest number of wickets on the day 1 of a test match in Australia since 1952.

First, it was the Australian pacers who landed the early punches after Jasprit Bumrah won the toss and elected to bat first. India lost four wickets in the first session and six in the second session to get bowled out for 150 runs.

Nitish Kumar Reddy, the debutant, top-scored for India with 41 runs, while Josh Hazlewood was the best Aussie bowler on show, bagging figures of 4/29. Starc, Cummins, and Mitchell Marsh took two wickets each, while off-spinner Nathan Lyon bowled only five overs.

India’s stand-in captain and their pace spearhead, Bumrah, led India’s fightback with the ball to the end the day with mind-blowing figures of 4/17 in 10 overs. Siraj took two wickets and debutant Harshit Rana claimed the prized scalp of Travis Head.

At stumps on day 1, Australia are 67/7, trailing by 83 runs.

Since pacers bowled for the majority of the day – with Lyon bowling only five overs and India not using Sundar yet – only 76.4 overs of play was possible even after using up the half-hour extension.
