Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25
List of all Border-Gavaskar Trophy winners

The first Border-Gavaskar Trophy series was played in 1996.
Since 1996, India and Australia have been clashing in test cricket for the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). It is named after two of these nation’s greatest batters and captains – Australia’s Allan Border and India’s Sunil Gavaskar.
Independent India and Australia first met in test cricket in 1947. Since then, they have met in 112 test matches. Out of these, Australia won 48 tests, India won 33 tests, 30 were drawn and one test ended in a tie.
However, it is India who have a slight edge over Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy history. They have contested in 61 BGT test matches so far, out of which, India emerged victorious on 25 occasions, while Australia won 23 tests, and 13 test matches ended in draws.
India also have won the most Border-Gavaskar Trophy series: from 1996 to 2025, 17 BGT series have been played; India won 10 series, Australia won six, and one series was drawn.
India are the only Asian side in history to win a test series in Australia, and they have done it twice.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy started in 1996 with a one-off test match in Delhi, which India won courtesy of Nayan Mongia’s century and Anil Kumble’s nine-wicket match haul.
Both teams have regularly been competing in test series and touring each other. The BGT series is now being hailed as equally important and prestigious as the historic Ashes, for which Australia and England compete every two years.
