Bangladesh will be docked a minimum of 10 WTC points after the 1st IND vs BAN test in Chennai.
The Bangladesh cricket team is set to face a fine and a penalty in the form of World Test Championship points being docked from their tally following the ongoing 1st IND vs BAN test in Chennai.
The IND vs BAN test series got underway on Thursday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, with the visiting captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, electing to bowl first after winning the toss.
The day 1 of the Chennai test ended with India slightly ahead at the score of 339/6. Local boy Ravi Ashwin notched up his sixth test century, and second in Chennai, and remained unbeaten on 102. Partnering him at the crease was Ravindra Jadeja, who was unbeaten on 86.
Why Bangladesh will be penalised at least 10 WTC points after 1st IND vs BAN test?
Despite an extra half an hour of play, Bangladesh managed to bowl only 80 overs on day 1 in Chennai, which is 10 fewer overs than the 90-over quota. This means that, according to the ICC rules, they would be docked 10 points from their WTC account.
As per article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, “A team will have one (1) World Test Championship competition point deducted from its points total for each Penalty Over it incurs during the Round Stage.”
Since Bangladesh are likely to be found 10 overs short of the required number of overs, despite the extended 30 minutes of play and after time allowances, 10 points will be subtracted from their WTC points tally after the Chennai test or after the series.
At the moment, Bangladesh are fourth in the WTC standings, a position they climbed to after beating Pakistan 2-0 in the test series in Rawalpindi. They have 33 WTC points and PCT of 45.83 before start of the India test.
