Hasan Mahmud’s wickets on day 1 in Chennai included Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud rattled the Indian top and middle order on day 1 of the ongoing IND vs BAN 1st test in Chennai. In the process, he joined Dale Steyn in an elite list.
Coming off a historic maiden test series win over Pakistan, Bangladesh stunned everyone as they had India on a tightrope at the Chepauk, which uncharacteristically assisted the pacers due to its red soil pitch, which had been brought in from Mumbai.
Earlier in the game, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto elected to bowl first after winning the toss. For the first time in seven years, a captain chose to bowl first in a test match in India against India. Both teams went with three pacers and in a rare event in test cricket in India.
Shanto’s decision was soon vindicated as Mahmud nipped out three huge Indian wickets – those of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli, all three back in the hut for single-digit scores. Rohit edged to first slip and Gill nicked down the leg side before Kohli outside edged through to the wicket-keeper. Mahmud’s first spell read 7-2-14-3.
Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal took India to lunch further unscathed. However, soon after lunch, Mahmud had Pant nicking through to Liton Das to claim his fourth wicket of the day. However, he could not complete his five-for today.
Nonetheless, he produced a terrific bowling performance, ending the day with figures of 4/58. At stumps on day 1, India are 339/6, courtesy of 86* from Ravindra Jadeja and 102* from R Ashwin.
Hasan Mahmud joins Dale Steyn on a rare list of pacers:
On Day 1 in Chennai, Hasan Mahmud equalled former South African fast bowler Dale Styen in an elusive list. Mahmud became only the second visiting pacer in test cricket since 2000 to take four wickets on day 1 of a test match in India.
