Ravi Ashwin hit a hundred and then took a five-for in the Chennai test.

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin once again showcased his class with both bat and the ball in the first of two-match test series against Bangladesh, which was played at his hometown in Chennai. The senior all-rounder played a vital role in helping India win the opening test of the series by a huge margin of 280 runs.

In the first innings, Ashwin batted brilliantly and made 113 runs to guide his side to 376 runs. However, the 38-year-old went wicketless in Bangladesh’s first innings, where they were bundled out for 149 runs.

Batting second, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant notched up brilliant centuries before the hosts declared at 287-4. Bangladesh got a target of 519 runs. While chasing, Bangladesh batters surrendered against Ravi Ashwin’s spin bowling masterclass.

The veteran off-spinner dismantled the visitors’ batting line-up with a six-wicket haul in 21 overs. Ashwin’s outstanding spell helped India clinch the Chennai test by 280 runs. Ravi Ashwin was adjudged as the player of the match for his brilliant all-round performance in the first test against Bangladesh. During the match, Ashwin went on to achieve some massive feats.

1. Overtook Courtney Walsh to become eighth highest wicket taker in test cricket

Before start of the Chennai test, Ashwin had 516 wickets to his name, only three behind Courtney Walsh, who had 519 wickets. Ashwin went wicketless in the first innings, but his 6-fer in the second innings helped him go past Walsh to become eighth-highest wicket-taker in the longest format of the game.

He achieved this milestone when he dismissed Shakib Al Hasan on day 4. Currently, Ashwin has 522 wickets to his name.

2. Equaled Shane Warne to register joint second-most five-wicket hauls in test cricket

With his five-wicket haul in the second innings, Ashwin registered his 37th five-for in test cricket. With his 37th five-for in tests, he equaled late Shane Warne as the bowler with joint second-most five-fors in test cricket.

Warne had played 145 tests and scalped 708 wickets with 37 five-fors in his test career. Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan leads the overall chart with 30 more five-fors, which is 67.

3. Most wickets by Indian bowler in fourth innings of test matches (Ashwin – 99, Kumble – 94)

After picking six wickets in fourth innings of the first test against Bangladesh, Ravi Ashwin became India’s leading wicket-taker in fourth innings of test cricket. Ashwin now has 99 wickets to his name in fourth innings of test matches. He overtook Anil Kumble, who had taken 94 wickets in fourth innings of test matches during his career.

Overall, Shane Warne leads the chart with 138 scalps in fourth innings. Only five bowlers have taken over 100 wickets in fourth innings in test cricket so far.

4. Oldest Indian to take a five-wicket haul in test cricket (38 years, 5 days)

With his 37th five-wicket haul in the first test match against Bangladesh, Ravi Ashwin broke Vinoo Mankad’s record of being the oldest Indian to pick a five-wicket haul in test cricket.

At the age of 38 years and 5 days, Ashwin has now become the oldest Indian bowler to pick a fifer in test cricket. Previously, Vinoo Mankad took a five-wicket haul at the age of 37 and 306 days against Pakistan in Peshawar in February 1955.

Ravi Ashwin added another record to his name during the opening test match against Bangladesh in Chennai. Before this test, Ashwin jointly held the record of taking most five-wicket hauls in ICC World Test Championship history along with Australia’s Nathan Lyon.

However, with his five-for in the Chennai test against Bangladesh, Ashwin overtook Lyon to become the bowler with most five-fors in ICC WTC history.

In 36 ICC WTC matches, Ashwin has scalped 180 wickets including 11 five-fors.
