Ravichandran Ashwin took three wickets on the first day of the second IND vs NZ test in Pune.

The second test of the three-match IND vs NZ test series has started in an exciting manner with both teams trading punches on the first day of the test. The first day displayed a great battle between the bat and ball with the spinners getting good purchase from the wicket.

New Zealand, having won the toss and electing to bat first, posted a competitive total of 259 runs in their first innings. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra hit crucial fifties, helping New Zealand go past 200 runs, but the Kiwi batting line-up collapsed on either side of tea.

Washington Sundar, who returned to the test side after over three years, was the star for India on day 1, returning with figures of 7/59.

India’s reply, however, got off to a shaky start as captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a duck by Tim Southee in the third over.

Amidst the highly competitive game on the first day in Pune, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin picked up three wickets that helped him go past Nathan Lyon on a couple of important tallies.

R Ashwin surpasses Lyon in two records

Ravichandran Ashwin had a memorable day in Pune as he surpassed Australian spinner Nathan Lyon for the most wickets in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC).

After picking up the wickets of Tom Latham, Will Young and Devon Conway, Ashwin now has 189 wickets in 39 WTC matches, overtaking Lyon’s tally of 187 wickets in 43 tests.

Additionally, Ashwin’s three wickets in the first innings saw him overtake Lyon on the list of all-time leading test wicket-takers as well. Now seventh on the list, Ashwin has 531 wickets in 104 tests, standing just ahead of Lyon, who has 530 wickets in 129 games.

The upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy will see these two legendary off-spinners go against each other. With the pitches in Australia expected to help the fast bowlers, the role of these two spinners would be even more crucial.
