IND vs SL: Rating performances of Indian players in the ODI series
The IND vs SL ODI series ended in favour of Sri Lanka by a 2-0 margin.
Team India had a hard time in the recently concluded IND vs SL ODI series as they suffered a humiliating series defeat without winning a single game. India were set moderate targets in all three games but they couldn’t cross the line even once.
This was the first ODI series for Gautam Gambhir as India’s head coach, and it didn’t end well. India lost a bilateral series against Sri Lanka after 27 years, and Rohit Sharma, who was India’s best player in the series, became only the third Indian captain to lose a bilateral ODI series in Sri Lanka.
There were not many good performers in the Indian camp. In this article, we will rate the performances of all Indian players who played in the IND vs SL ODI series.
Rating Indian players’ performances in the IND vs SL ODI series:
1. Rohit Sharma – 8.5
The Indian captain Rohit Sharma was the best player for India and ended up scoring the most runs in the IND vs SL ODI series. He scored 157 runs at an average of 52.3 and a strike rate of 141.44, with two fifties. As a batter, he was brilliant and gave India flying starts in all three games. But he threw his wicket away in all three games. Had Rohit stayed on the crease in the first two games, India could have won them.
2. Shubman Gill – 4
Shubman Gill had a decent T20I series, but in ODIs, he looked clueless. He had the best time to bat when the ball was hard and new, but he couldn’t use his advantage. Gill managed scores of 16, 35 and 6.
3. Virat Kohli – 4
Virat Kohli scored a total of 58 runs in the three innings he played in this series. That speaks volumes about his lacklustre show. He is India’s most-capped ODI batter in this team, but he wasn’t able to read the Sri Lankan spinners. Virat was dismissed LBW in all three innings, which shows he couldn’t read them at all.
4. Shreyas Iyer – 3
Shreyas Iyer has a reputation for being a brilliant batter against spin, but in this series, he failed shockingly. He was trying to be aggressive against spin sometimes but it didn’t work at all. He scored 38 runs in three innings, and his ODI average, which was 50 before the start of the series, has dropped to 47.47 now.
5. KL Rahul (wk) – 4
KL Rahul is another Indian batter who has played many game-changing innings in tough conditions in the past. But here, he looked rusty. He played a fighting knock of 31 in the first match but couldn’t take India over the line. He registered a duck in the second game and was dropped from the third IND vs SL game.
6. Shivam Dube – 4
Shivam Dube was picked for the IND vs SL ODIs because Hardik Pandya wasn’t available. Dube had a decent impact in the shorter format. But his introduction to the ODI series turned out to be a flop idea. The southpaw only managed 34 runs in three innings, including a duck in the second match. With the ball, he took one wicket in the ten overs he bowled.
7. Axar Patel – 7
Axar Patel had decent outings in this series. He was India’s second-best batter after Rohit. He scored 79 runs in three innings, including 44 in the second game. With the ball, he took four wickets at an economy rate of 3.86. He could have done better but he had some good moments in the series.
8. Washington Sundar – 7
Washington Sundar was Man of the Match in the third and final T20I. So, he entered the ODI series with some form. And he did well with the ball. Sundar was India’s highest wicket-taker with five wickets at an economy rate of 3.88. He scored 50 runs in three innings.
9. Rishabh Pant – 2
Rishabh Pant didn’t play the first two matches, but he was given a chance in the third IND vs SL game. He managed a score of 6 in his only outing, which didn’t help India’s cause. With the gloves, he missed an easy stumping.
10. Riyan Parag – 6.5
Riyan Parag, who had a decent T20I series, got a chance to make his ODI debut during the third game on Wednesday. He replaced Arshdeep Singh and did his job as a bowler. Parag took 3/54 and became only the seventh Indian bowler to take a three-wicket haul on ODI debut. With the bat, he looked good during his 15-run knock.
11. Kuldeep Yadav – 5
Kuldeep Yadav was the biggest threat for Sri Lanka, but they played him cautiously. The wrist-spinner ended up with only four wickets in three innings on spin-friendly pitches in Colombo. He couldn’t perform as per the expectations on such surfaces.
12. Mohammed Siraj – 3
Mohammed Siraj was India’s first-choice seamer in the IND vs SL series. But his performances were below par. He bowled an expensive spell of 1/78 in the final game. Siraj’s economy rate in the series was 6.28, and he took only three wickets.
13. Arshdeep Singh – 3
Arshdeep Singh couldn’t deliver anything notable with the ball in the two games he played. He finished with 2 wickets at an economy rate of 6.17. Arshdeep didn’t take wickets with new ball, nor did he contain runs at the back end. That’s why he was a total failure in this IND vs SL ODIs.
