India suffered back-to-back whitewashes against Ireland and England in T20Is.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made a massive change to the T20I team after T20 World Cup and the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
Shreyas Iyer was brought back to the shortest format and appointed the new captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav, under whom the team didn’t lose a single series. Youngster Tilak Varma was named as Iyer’s deputy, replacing former vice-captain Axar Patel.
The decisions didn’t prove fruitful as India suffered big blows on tours of Ireland and England. The Shreyas Iyer & Co. lost both the T20Is against Ireland in June, suffering a defeat against them for the first time in international cricket.
In the five-match T20I series against England, the Men in Blue faced a humiliating whitewash. After the opening game was washed out due to rain, England crushed the visitors in the remaining four encounters to bag a 4-0 victory.
The BCCI has already made it clear that they are going to analyse the causes behind India’s horrible performances in both series. Moreover, reports also claim that BCCI are discussing assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, fast bowling coach Morne Morkel, and fielding coach T Dilip’s future as support staff members.
Ryan ten Doeschate & Morne Morkel to end their contracts after England ODI series- Reports

According to a report by Times of India (TOI), Doeschate is looking forward to parting ways as the Indian Cricket Team’s assistant coach after the England ODIs. He is having issues with continuous travel with the team throughout the year. On the other hand, Morkel is also expected to end his contract as he is also looking for options.
“Doeschate isn’t very sure of continuing with this job. He has conveyed his problems with travelling with the team throughout the year. Morkel is still weighing his options. The board is discussing the matter with the two coaches and will try to see if things can be sorted out,” a BCCI source informed TOI.
Both Ryan and Morkel were handpicked by head coach Gautam Gambhir as support staff members in July 2024, when the latter was appointed as India’s head coach.
The report also added that Doeschate is in talks with an IPL franchise to join them as support staff member. Morkel has not made any comments over his future.
Moreover, fielding coach T Dilip will also have to save his job as the BCCI was not happy with the fielding standards of the team during the Ireland and England T20Is.
India are set to tour Sri Lanka in the first week of August for a two-match test series. If Morkel do not continue after July, BCCI would be forced to send Lakshmipathy Balaji, who was recently appointed as the fast bowling coach at the Centre of Excellence (CoE), to Sri Lanka.
VVS Laxman, CoE’s Cricket Head, is set to travel to Zimbabwe along with his coaching staff unit for India’s three-match T20I series later this month.
