India won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 defeating Sri Lanka in the final on April 2, 2011.

This very date in history, April 2, marked a historic moment for Indian cricketing history as the then MS Dhoni-led India won the 2011 ODI World Cup. This iconic moment came after a 28-year wait since their first victory in 1983. Kapil Dev-led side defeated West Indies to win their first World Cup trophy as they etched their names in the record books.

In the ODI World Cup 2011, India entered as clear favorites with the marquee event held in the sub-continent. Led by legendary cricketer Dhoni, India showcased dominance throughout the league stage as they just lost one match against South Africa.

The Men in Blue then hammered mighty Australia in the second quarter-final match in Ahmedabad as they successfully chased down the target of 261 runs with five wickets remaining. Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, and Yuvraj scored crucial half-centuries in that match.

After defeating the mighty Aussies in the quarter-final, India faced arch-rivals Pakistan in the second semi-final in Mohali. The Men in Blue won the thrilling contest by 29 runs, which perfectly set the stage for the final showdown against Sri Lanka.

The iconic Wankhede Stadium hosted the India vs Sri Lanka match. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, a fighting century from SL’s Mahela Jayawardene helped them reach 274/6. While chasing, India got off to a shaky start with two early losses, but opener Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni stitched a match-winning partnership of 109 runs.

Although Gambhir fell short of his century by three runs, Dhoni along with Yuvraj, steered the hosts to victory with six wickets in hand. Dhoni’s iconic winning six will be remembered forever in the Indian cricketing history.

Tendulkar, who was playing his last ODI World Cup got a perfect farewell from his side. He witnessed his dream-come-true moment after years of hard work and dedication. The legendary cricketer also got a lap from his teammates around the Wankhede Stadium after defeating Sri Lanka.

The former Indian players, who played a crucial role in the side’s successful triumph in the 2011 World Cup, took to social media to celebrate the 13th anniversary of the glorious moment.
