India enter elite list after top 5 batsmen hit fifties in IND vs NED CWC 2023 clash

Indian batters Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul both scored centuries against Netherlands in Bengaluru.

Indian batting line-up is having a run-fest against Netherlands at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Indian batters are celebrating Diwali in style against Dutch, as the entire batting-order have so far gone past 50-plus mark in their innings. From Indian captain Rohit Sharma to India’s number 5 batter, KL Rahul, everyone contributed in big numbers, along with Shreyas Iyer, who went on to score his 5th ODI century.

This was only the third time in ODI cricket that team’s top five batters went on to cross the fifty-run mark in their innings. Australia became the first team in history where top 5 batters went on to score fifty plus. Australia registered this record in Jaipur against India in 2013, where they failed to defend 359 runs in the game. Australia repeated the same against India in Sydney in 2020, where the top five went on to score fifty-plus and Steve Smith scored a century.

First occasion in the World Cup by India

This is the first occasion in a World Cup game that the top five batters of a team have gone on to score fifty-plus in one innings. It all started with Indian opener Shubman Gill scoring a half-century in 28 balls and setting the tone for the others in the game. Shubman Gill departed after scoring 51 runs off 32 balls and smashed 3 fours and 4 sixes in his innings. Indian captain Rohit Sharma then went on to score 61 runs in 54 balls and became the second batter to score fifty.

After the openers departed, Virat Kohli joined the list and departed right after completing his 50. Kohli scored 51 runs on 56 balls. After the top-3, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul went on to score magnificent centuries in their innings. Shreyas Iyer scored 128 runs in 94 balls with 10 fours and 5 towering sixes, while KL Rahul scored the fastest World Cup hundred for team India. Rahul completed his century in just 62 deliveries.

Wicket-keeper batter Rahul perished after playing a splendid knock of 102 runs in 64 balls. Rahul smoked four sixes in his innings and completed his ton with two back-to-back sixes. Rahul broke Rohit Sharma’s record for the fastest World Cup century. Earlier in the tournament, Rohit smashed a 63-ball ton against Afghanistan in Delhi. Netherlands need 411 to win the game and qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.
