Manav Suthar broke a handful of records with his maiden 10-wicket haul at Galle.
Indian Test cricket has always had a rich tradition of spinners, but Manav Suthar has launched himself to immediate glory in the longest format of international cricket. His rise has been built around domestic consistency and the ability to make the ball spin across any given surface.
At just 24, Suthar has already shown that he could emerge as a long-term prospect for India in the longest format of the game. What makes his emergence even more significant is the speed with which he rose to fame in international cricket after making his debut following domestic success.
Starting from the Ranji Trophy with Rajasthan, he made his first-class debut in 2022 and quickly established himself as the state’s most prolific wicket-taker in the red-ball format.
In his first eight first-class games, he collected 44 wickets, including four 4-wicket hauls, two 5-wicket hauls and impressively two 10-wicket hauls.
Soon, his domestic career saw great prominence, as he has picked 157 wickets in his Test career in just 33 appearances, alongside 1,104 runs with the bat, including a first-class century, thus justifying every bit of his selection for the Afghanistan tour of India one-off Test series.

Upon being called up to international cricket, Suthar immediately demonstrated that his domestic numbers were no fluke and he was built for the big stage. He took seven wickets in his debut against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh, and India won the match by a massive margin of 300 runs.
Along with scoring some runs with the bat, Suthar began to look like a good fit for India’s all-round setup. Given that Ravindra Jadeja is in the final phase of his career, India should consider options to replace the legendary all-rounder, and young Suthar could emerge as a potential option for the future.
Manav Suthar‘s transformation into India’s main XI spinner came in the first Test between India and Sri Lanka at Galle, which marked Suthar’s debut in the World Test Championship. Over the two innings, he remained India’s leading wicket-taker and finished the game with a maiden 10-wicket haul.
With 17 wickets in just two games after his debut, two five-wicket hauls, and a maiden ten-wicket haul, Suthar seemed irreplaceable in the Indian playing XI, especially when the Men in Blue played on subcontinent tracks.
Is Suthar India’s long-term solution to spin concerns?
Over the past decade, India have dominated every team on home soil, and a significant share of the credit for this goes to two of the finest spinners in the history of Test cricket, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.
While Jadeja still holds the fort from one end, Ashwin’s retirement has raised concerns about the presence of genuine spinners in India’s squad.
With Kuldeep Yadav receiving limited opportunities and Washington Sundar relying more on line-and-length accuracy than on spin, Suthar has emerged as a strong contender. His ability to maintain his length consistently over long spells gives him an edge over any batter.
Most importantly, unlike a few of India’s recent tries among spinners, Suthar has shown some great ability to adapt. He picked two five-wicket hauls under two completely different conditions, which gives him added potential as a spin master. Moreover, he has the edge over many of his contenders due to his ability to contribute with the bat.
Consequently, Suthar has emerged as one of India’s potent weapons in red-ball cricket, thanks to the strength of his lower-order batting, ability to actually spin the ball, rather than relying merely on drift and pitch-assisted turn, his calm temperament, and his natural knack for accurate bowling.
When did Manav Suthar score his first-class century?
Playing for Rajasthan, Manav Suthar scored his maiden first-class hundred against Himachal Pradesh in a Group D match in the Ranji Trophy 2026.
Which team does Manav Suthar play for in the IPL?
Manav Suthar plays for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL.
